Celebrate Women’s History Month

Every March, the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion (CMEI) commemorates Women’s History Month. What began simply as a Women’s History Week in the United States has evolved into an entire month full of celebration, education, and commemoration of women who come before us. The CMEI celebrates this month with all who identify as women including, but not limited to women of color, trans-women, queer women, and all other marginalized groups of women. The CMEI hopes to create co-curricular programing with our partners to highlight and amplify the voices of women who are continuing to create change as well as champion for women on the MSU Denver campus. On March 8th, we also recognize International Women’s Day. We want to acknowledge the oppression of trans, non-binary, gender-confirming, and women-identified individuals with emphasis on uplifting voices from the respective community.

This year’s theme of Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories honors women in every community who have devoted their lives and talents to pursuing justice and truth in all aspects of our lives.

Women’s History Month Kick-Off Event

Wednesday, March 1st | 11:00AM – 1:00PM | Tivoli Turnhalle

Open to the public, no registration required

To kick off Women’s History Month, we celebrate women entrepreneurs that tell their stories through their art, creativity, and products. We look to these women owned/women led businesses and organizations as role models to show us all where hard work and passion can lead. Women entrepreneurs are creating new businesses, disrupting established industries and developing innovative products at a record pace. The success of these women do not come without facing many obstacles and barriers, as women owners make up only one-third of the business market today. Though these obstacles are persistent, it reveals just how powerful women are in overcoming them. Gender equality in business requires changes in public and private sectors along with community buy-in to continue the upward mobility of successful women.

Come celebrate women entrepreneurs in the Denver community through purchasing goods and engaging in resources made for and by women.

Tri-Institutional Movie Night: The Woman King

Thursday, March 2nd | 5:00 – 7:00PM | Tivoli Turnhalle

Join our Tri-Institutional partners: the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion at MSU Denver, the Student Activities Department at the University of Colorado – Denver, and the Student Programming, Activities & Resource Center at Community College of Denver in the showing of The Woman King

The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Oscar®-winner Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for.

Self-Defense with Austin Dempers From Fire & Root Collective

Thursday, March 16th | 11:45AM – 1:00PM | Tivoli Turnhalle

Curious about self-defense? Looking for accessible, trauma informed information? Fire + Root Collective has got you; accessible, trauma informed self-defense and yoga; for women and gender non-conforming folks.

Wherever you fall on the experience scale you will be supported by our extensive background in Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Yoga and Mindfulness. Each class will begin by connecting with our minds and bodies through journaling, meditation and gentle movement while discussing the ways our body responds to stress. We then learn the foundations of self-defense such as punches, kicks, fight stance and incorporate those movements into ground defense as well as additional tools for a wide variety of situations. We end each class guiding our bodies back into a restful state (and a little dance party.) Fire + Root classes provide an authentic, safe, supportive and empowering environment for you to thrive and feel confident with your extensive knowledge of self-regulation and self-defense tools to add into your already amazing toolbox.
